Hi, I'm Catherine, and this is my blog, The Virginia Housewife. The original Virginia Housewife was an 1815 housekeeping and recipe book, written by Thomas Jefferson's kinswoman Mary Randolph, and tells you pretty much everything you'd need to know to be the 19th century hostess with the mostest, including how to boil eels and clean a calf's head and feet. Mary Randolph would probably not approve of me or my blog (I'm sorry, Ms. Randolph) but who knows? Maybe she knew how to let it rip from time to time.
I'm a 15th generation Virginian, born and bred. I am both passionately fond and passionately critical of my state. I say "wooder" for "water." I love collecting paint swatches, sewing my own clothes, vintage books, baking bread, hydrangeas, and visiting as many new and interesting destinations around our area as possible. This blog touches on all of those things and more.
I live in Norfolk, VA, with my husband James and my daughter Anne (we call her Anouk) and our three cats, Josie, Malcolm, and Hank. Together we are renovating our 1940s Cape Cod by the Chesapeake Bay. Some of us are doing more of the work than others.
I also write regular features for My Active Child, a Hampton Roads-based parenting website. I love hearing from readers, so please drop me a line if you have any questions, suggestions, or just to say hello!
